[Ltsp-discuss] Memory Comparison for Linux Desktops

Hello,

I hope everyone is doing well.

We are getting ready to deploy a new LTSP server based on Edubuntu 14.04
and I'm thinking about the different desktop environment options,
especially since my server is a little older and can use all the help I can
give it.

I found this link:

http://l3net.wordpress.com/2013/03/17/a-memory-comparison-of-light-linux-desktops/

where the person installs over 30 desktop environments and measures the
memory consumption of each one. Based on this it looks like KDE was the
biggest consumer at 201 MB with Unity and Gnome 3 right behind it at 192
and 155 respectively. I noticed MATE is listed at 42 MB and that is the
environment I was considering, especially since the teachers prefer the
"traditional" window setup.

I wanted to ask -- is anyone running MATE and how do you find it? And do
you agree with the results in the link's analysis? Is Gnome too heavy to
run from experience?

Thanks!
Joseph

Hello,

Here we use MATE, and while it can look a little old fashioned at times,
it is easy to configure, and really lightweight. Removing restricted
items from the menu bars is really simple, and there is plenty of
documentation available for it around. However, in the future I am
looking to replace it with something that looks a bit more modern, maybe
Unity, dependant on resource usage. I agree with the article in that it
has a light memory footprint.

Good luck with the search,

Hello Harry,

Thank you for your response and experience.

Was it easy to install and get MATE working? Any tips you'd give as I
haven't used it before.

Thank you
Joseph

Hi Joseph,

It is really simple, and I have a guide for anyone interested, using
menulibre at:

Good luck!
