Hi All,

Using 14.04 ltsp-pnp fat clients. When a student is browsing/loading a
java-based sim such as on
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-forms-and-changes the client
asks a few things:

1. "What should Firefox do with this file?" User selects 'open with
IcedTea...'.
2. "Your Java version is out of date what would you like to do?" If I
select "update to newer version" that leads to a dead end of course, So I
choose "Later" and it keeps working...
3. "Do you want to run this application" and I chose "Run" and it works.

Is there a way to universally deal with #2 above and #1 would be nice too?
I've re-built the client but still get the 'update to newer version'
prompt. I remember there used to be a way of editing Firefox pref file in
the chroot but now use pnp so that's different I think. Also seems at one
time I added a customized pref file by cp to everyone's home directory.
Looking for a pre-existing help page on this if available (With google help
I can do Greek-->English translate!).

Thanks!
David

Hi All,
Using 14.04 ltsp-pnp fat clients. When a student is browsing/loading a
java-based sim such as on
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-forms-and-changes [1]
* "What should Firefox do with this file?" User selects open with
IcedTea....
* "Your Java version is out of date what would you like to do?" If I
select "update to newer version" that leads to a dead end of course,
So I choose "Later" and it keeps working...
* "Do you want to run this application" and I chose "Run" and it
works.
Is there a way to universally deal with #2 above and #1 would be nice
too? Ive re-built the client but still get the update to newer
version
prompt. I remember there used to be a way of editing Firefox pref
file
in the chroot but now use pnp so thats different I think.
I'm sorry, David, not to be of more help. Just to say with pnp the
whole server from / on down is your "chroot" which is why there is no
separate chroot.

Also seems
at one time I added a customized pref file by cp to everyones home
directory. Looking for a pre-existing help page on this if available

Thanks!

David yes solutions for this exist for all users, but unfortunately
Firefox 52+ no longer supports Java applets at all, so there's no point
in even translating from a Greek wiki page to English there. :)

https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Problems-with-add-ons-plugins-or/Why-do-Java-Silverlight-Adobe-Acrobat-and-other-plugins-no/ta-p/31069

Time for all java applets to switch to html 5!
(or to a webstarter technology, independent of the browser)

Firefox ESR will support Java applets for another year, but it's not
available in Ubuntu, while it is available in Debian.
Although I don't think it's worth it if it's just for 1 more year...

Wow! that was close, almost updated my Firefox this morning. Thanks Alkis.

Now, I just tried the java app in question (ends in .jnlp) on my mac which
has FF v. 52 and get the message "What should Firefox do with this file?"
and I click on "Java Web Start" and it starts! Now this seems to contradict
what you are saying, or perhaps this website has ... OK don't really
understand some of these technologies. My questions are:

1. since it seems to work on my Mac on FF 52, does that mean that this
website HAS updated to 'web api' so I don't have to worry about the java
apps on that site working w/FF?
2. If I do have to concern myself with this for the phet site, how can I
set FF to stay at the latest version of 51.x?

Opening a .jnlp file is like opening a .doc file; it doesn't require any
support from the browser, and it doesn't require any plugins.
It runs locally and natively inside the OS.

After you open it, you can even close the browser. Or you can get it
with wget. Or you can store it locally and launch it without a browser.
Etc etc.

But all these are unrelated to LTSP so I don't think we should continue
discussing it in this list... :)

Cheers,
Alkis
