Discussion:
[Ltsp-discuss] Igel clients on LTSP?

I got a box with Igel clients. They have 1 GB RAM and run on 500 MHz.

There is some SD or SSD on these clients which boots a minimum Linux
desktop. Then they look for an rdesktop server. Strange, I could not
find a way to PXE boot in the Bios.

Do you think I could somehow make use of them? What about RDP under
LTSP, does it make sense?

Thanks for your ideas.

long time ago I also started with an Igel client (don't remember the specs). I
sorted it out after some time because it became too slow, especially what
graphics concerned.
1GB RAM and 500MHz don't sound very recent.

RDP makes very much sense on LTSP. We have one M$-Windows Terminalserver 2003
in our network and all the Linux desktops can use Word, Exel, and friends as
applications with RDP from this server.
They just run a command like this (where wtsv is our Windows TS):

rdesktop -k de -z -d TZV -g90% -s "C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office14\\excel" wtsv

Works fine.

Enjoy the weekend.

Hallo Helmut,

would you say running a separate Windows Server makes more sense than
including Win-Applications via Wine into the fat client image?

I have never had a Windows Server OS and we used to include the
M$-Office apps via Crossover and Wine, so I wonder wether running one
Linux server plus one MS server would perform so much better it's worth
the effort.

Happy Easter

if Wine and Crossover serve you well keep them.
My experience with one Windows Terminalserver in our LAN is quite good. With
little effort you can provide the M$-Windows applications seamlessly on the
Linux desktops. Though you have to own the M$-TS license and connect licenses
for the clients.
