Is it unusual for $UPSTART_SESSION to be empty for a user who logs into via
SCREEN_07="ldm"?

On the server when I log into the desktop and open a terminal "echo
$UPSTART_SESSION" is set to something like
"unix:abstract=/com/ubuntu/upstart-session/..../....." but on the clients
(both fat and thin) logging in from SCREEN_07="ldm" get an empty response
from "echo $UPSTART_SESSION"

I am using Ubuntu 14.04

Hi, the Ubuntu/LTSP packaging is broken, anyone interested in getting
LTSP to work properly in Ubuntu 14.04 should read this bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/1457730

Fixed packages are available in the PPA that is mentioned in that bug
report.
