I'm running debian 7.6 stable as my LTSP server and I'm using shuttle
DS437's as my thin clients. I'm trying to use a USB DVD drive on my thin
client and it doesn't up in the file manager 'nautilus or thunar'.

If I go to the virtual terminal on the thin client and login as root
then I can see my USB DVD drive as /dev/sr0 and I can mount it manually
as /mnt and look inside.

Here are the packages I'm using on the thin client relating to ltsp
ii ltsp-client 5.4.2-6+deb7u1
i386 complete LTSP client environment
ii ltsp-client-core 5.4.2-6+deb7u1
i386 basic LTSP client environment
ii ltspfsd 1.1-2
all Fuse based remote filesystem hooks for LTSP thin clients
ii ltspfsd-core 1.1-2
i386 Fuse based remote filesystem daemon for LTSP thin clients

Where have you looked in nautilus or thunar? They should show up in
/media/USERNAME/DEVICENAME.

Are there entries in /var/run/ltspfs_fstab?

Do other devices, such as USB sticks work?

Is ltspfsd running on the thin client?

What filesystem is on the DVDs you're trying to access?

I have looked in /media but this shows the contents of the /media on the
server where we have some shares to another server mounted which thin
clients need access to.

What I have tested is this

Booting the thin client with the USB DVD drive connected and DVD
inserted the user can see the contents of the DVD. If I remove the DVD
and insert it again whilst logged in, the DVD does not show up in
/media/<user>/cdrom.

Booting with the USB DVD drive without the DVD inserted, then logging in
and inserting the DVD it doesn't work

Booting without the usb dvd attached, logging in and then attaching the
USB DVD drive and inserting the DVD doesn't work either.

So there is a work around at the moment the user just has to shutdown
and insert the USB DVD & the dvd itself before booting off the server.

That's really useful information...

I suspect it may be issues with cdpinger, which is hopefully fixed in
newer versions of ltspfs by dropping cdpinger entirely and using some
simpler udev rules. I did test with a USB CDROM drive when rewriting
that part of the code, which should work the same...

Debian Jessie currently ships with ltspfs 1.4-1. If you could try with a
Jessie thin client, or alternately rebuilding the newer ltspfs version
for Debian Wheezy... it would be good to know if it fixes your problem.
